Influence of social networks for teenagers

nowdays teenagers must have social networks right? *andsodoihaha
but maybe there is something that teenagers don't know about social networks is *yeametoo

and so the increased use of Social Networking Websites has become an international phenomenon in the past several years. What started out as a hobby for some computerliterate people has become a social norm and way of life for people from all over the world (Boyd, 2007). Teenagers and young adults have especially embraced these sites as a way to connect with their peers, share information, reinvent their personalities, and showcase their social lives (Boyd, 2007).
A social network is a social structure made up of a set of social actors (such as individuals or organizations) and a set of the dyadicties between these actors. The social networks perspective provides a set of methods for analyzing the structure of whole social entities as well as a variety of theories explaning the patterns observed in these structures.

The idea of “Social Networking” has existed for several decades as a way for people to communicate in society and build relationships with others (Coyle & Vaughn, 2008). With the increase of technology used for communicating with others and the popularity of the Internet, “Social Networking” has become an activity that is done primarily on the Internet, with sites like MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, Friendster, and Xanga (Coyle & Vaughn, 2008). Social networking sites (SNS) may be defined as:

Social networking is actually good for us, but if we do not use it for positive things then, social networking can be bad for us. So, it's better if we use social networking for the benefit and use as needed.
The positive influences :

  • Empathy
Each of us spends a little too long talking about ourselves on social networking sites. Which is perfectly natural. We’re sharing our lives – the ups and downs, the twists and turns – with people we think will care. They generally do care, and will tell you so. They will listen to what you have to say, and help you deal with any problems you may be facing. If this isn’t the case then you may want to find new friends.
The point is that by all of us sharing our experiences, both good and bad, on social networking sites, we’re able to empathize with each other. A friend may have gone through a similar ordeal that you now are, and they will be able to inform you how they got through it. You’ll also be able to see for yourself that they made it out the other side, that this issue didn’t derail them, and they’re perhaps better for the experience.Social networking sites can act as a kind of group therapy session.

  • Speedy Communication
Our time is being stretched thinner and thinner by work and family commitments, but social networking sites offer a chance to communicate in a speedy and efficient manner. Writing an update for Twitter takes all of 20 seconds, and with cross-posting over other social networks switched on, that update reaches everyone you want it to reach (and probably more besides) in an instant. One of the reasons I dislike making phone calls is the unnecessary banter they necessitate. You can’t just say what you want to say and then hang up. Doing so is seen as downright rude. Instead you have to swap pleasantries before saying what you want to say, and then make swap more pleasantries before the conversation comes to a natural conclusion.
Social networking sites allow you to live a life unhindered by small talk.

The Bad Influence :
  • Reduced learning and research capabilities
Students have started relying more on the information accessible easily on these social networking sites and the web. This reduces their learning and research capabilities.
  • Reduction in real human contact
The more time the students spend on these social media sites, the less time they will spend socializing in person with others. This reduces their communication skills. They will not be able to communicate and socialize effectively in person with others. The employers are getting more and more unsatisfied with the communication skills of the fresh graduates due to this reason. The effective communication skills are key to success in the real world.
  • Effect on health
The excessive use of these sites affect the mental as well as physical health. Students do not take their meals on time and take proper rest. They take excessive amount of coffee or tea to remain active and focused which effects negatively on their health.*woaa
The overuse of these sites on a daily basis has many negative effects on the physical and mental health of students making them lethargic and unmotivated to create contact with the people in person. The parents should check and balance on their children when they use the internet. They should be on guard whether they are using it for appropriate time period or not. The peers and teachers should also help students make them aware of the negative effects and explain what they are losing in the real world by sticking to these social networking sites.
Efforts to avoid the impact of social networking for students
we can minimize the use of social networking. Using social networking just for the things you need and to communicate.
In the end, I just wanna say, we need social networks but we may not rely on it. Social networking is actually good for us, but if we do not use it for positive things then, social networking can be bad for us. So, it's better if we use social networking for the benefit and use as needed.*ppyong
